Thanks to a government regulation, builders are nor required to include a retention or water garden design in every community project. It is now very common in many American communities to have water garden. However, these gardens of ponds can cause problem if neglected and may emit foul smell due to the build up of cattails, algae and organic wastes.
One such example was the case in one large community on Maryland’s Eastern shore where a supposedly beautiful storm water pond became a problem for the village instead of providing a place for relaxation. Residents complained of a foul smell coming from the pond and the build up of methane.
The decision of the community to hire the services of the Maryland Aquatics Nurseries Inc., was a good choice., to rehabilitate the water garden and bring back its old beauty.
The first thing the crew from Maryland Aquatics did, was to install a diffuser aeration system for ever .25 acre of the pond surface area. The installation of the device almost immediately improved the appearance of the pond.
Next, the Maryland Aquatics’ Floating Wetlands installed a device to keep maintain an eco-friendly solution to the water garden design and at the same time make the project more beautiful. The device, a foam-based rafts grow plants can consume nutrients coming from the pond through biomass conversion and through microbial activity located within the roots dangling beneath the rafts.
A total of eight wetlands were installed for each .25 acre of the pond. The 32 devices installed, which covered 4 percent of the entire pond, were already sufficient to remove at least 20 percent of the water garden’s nitrogen. To get the best result, engineers at Maryland Aquatics suggested that 20 percent of the pond should be covered.
The whole community was elated with the marked improvement of their water garden and congratulated the builders for their efforts. The problem of algae disappeared almost immediately, according to residents of the area. The physical appearance of the water garden improved dramatically, according to the community.
Instead of being an eyesore, the storm pond is again a place for gathering and family picnic. With the rehabilitation, the pond is once again an important place where the community can gather.
For its efforts, the Maryland Aquatics was awarded new projects to do the rehabilitation of other community water gardens in the region.
The completed project showed impressive results. ‘. For their efforts, the Maryland Aquatics was rewarded with several other contracts from communities wanting their ponds rehabilitated.
Although community builders are required to install water garden design in their project, it is not specified that they must provide a beautiful storm pond. The Maryland Eastern shore community have proven that a little investment in improving their storm water ponds was worth it as it enabled Maryland Aquatics to gain new projects.
