Choosing the Best Aquarium

Picking a new aquarium is not difficult if you take into account some factors, including the size, shape and material. We will look at these factors so that you can choose the best aquarium for you and your pets.

Size of the Aquarium

Even though many people imagine that it is right to begin with a small aquarium, this isn’t in fact the best choice as a smaller tank is more difficult to look after and will need much more work to keep in a healthy condition. This is because water in a small aquarium is much more rapidly affected by changes, therefore if the temperature outside the tank changes unexpectedly, for example, there will be a rapid alteration in the condition of the water in the aquarium. A larger tank will always be a great deal more stable. Also, for a larger fish tank the wastes from the fish, will be distributed through a larger volume of water and consequently will be less able to harm your fish.  A 40 gallon tank is a good size to start with at a minimum.

Which is Best? Glass or Acrylic?

Now you need to decide between a glass or acrylic aquarium. This needs to be thought about with shape of the tank you like better in mind as some shapes, cylindrical for instance, can only be bought in acrylic. Glass tanks are generally cheaper than acrylic tanks but are much heavier. They can also start to leak as they get older but this is easily dealt with. They are not offered in so many different shapes as acrylic tanks. If you wish to buy an unusual shaped aquarium you will probably have to buy acrylic.

Acrylic tanks are pricier than all glass fish tanks but are lighter in weight and, since they are manufactured in 1 piece, don’t have a tendency to leak. Care must be taken not to scratch the outside of the tank and you must not use any abrasive cleaners on the acrylic because this will cause tiny scratches on the exterior which will make it look cloudy.

The Shape of the Aquarium

The familiar rectangular tank is certainly the best shape for an aquarium because of it’s high surface to water ratio which gives the best gas exchange. Nevertheless if you prefer a different shape then you should make certain aeration is good so that your fish receive sufficient oxygen. Acrylic aquariums can be purchased in many different shapes which includes round, cylindrical, hexagon, octagon and wall mounted or made into coffee tables.

What is the Best Location for Your Aquarium?

When thinking about where to locate your fish tank ensure that you have plenty of room and that the tank’s weight can be accommodated. A 50 gallon tank filled with water will weigh about 550  lbs so make sure the floorboards and table are strong enough. You can place a wall aquarium on a dividing wall so that the aquarium can be viewed from two rooms and makes a magnificent focal point to a room.
