The Basic Equipment for Keeping a Stable Aquarium

Wednesday 30 September 2009 @ 5:41 pm

If there’s one thing I wish I knew when I started running a saltwater aquarium, it would be how to use automatic equipment to keep my tank stable. The most dangerous thing in a saltwater aquarium is wild swings in the water quality. The three things that change most rapidly in a saltwater system are temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels. Dramatic swings in these water parameters can have a serious impact on the health of your fish and other livestock, and using machines to automatically adjust them is the best way to ensure a healthy, beautiful aquarium.

The most crucial piece of equipment is an aquarium chiller. It’s a machine that automatically regulates the aquarium’s temperature, cooling it off immediately if it gets too high. Heaters are just a simple heat source – they keep warming up as much as their power allows, but this changes when the temperature in the room does. An aquarium chiller uses precicse sensors and refrigeration technology to automatically cool the water whenever the temperature begins to climb. This way you can use the strongest lights you want without having to worry about temperature swings.

Another important tool is an auto top-off system. A sensor turns the machine on when the water level drops and refills it. Changes in salinity are one of the most dangerous things that can happen in a reef aquarium, and auto top-offs remove the risk. It pours fresh water into the aquarium and keeps the salinity stable.

The third important piece of equipment is a protein skimmer. Waste nutrients from your fish and extra food build up naturally in your aquarium. These can spiral out of control and start algae and bacterial blooms that can quickly kill a tank. Protein skimmers bubble the waste products out of the water, capturing them in a cup for easy removal.

These pieces of equipment aren’t always cheap, but it’s important to remember that they’re an investment. However, this equipment will more than pay for itself over time by protecting your aquarium. I wouldn’t waste my time starting a new aquarium without all of this equipment in place.

Pick The Best Dry Boat Storage For Your Marina Yachts

Monday 28 September 2009 @ 4:33 pm

While you may think that a marina is just a marina and you may not give much thought to the idea of what services they offer, you may want to think again. As any career boating enthusiast could easily let you know, the marina you choose is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make when it comes to the care of your boat and the experience you get from boating. Check out Private Yacht.

Ideally, you want to locate a marina that has an extensive amount of holdings. The more locations and holdings offered by your marina company the more options you’ll eventually have when it comes to utilizing your watercraft. This is a good starting point to identify what companies you want to work with.

One of the next things you want to take into consideration is that location of the marina.  You will want to chose a location that is convenient for long or short boating trips.  Many boaters also have certain activities they enjoy doing. For an example, if you primarily use your Boat Storage for fishing you may want to find a marina with a bait shop on site.  Selecting a marina that caters to your hobbies will enrich your boating experience.

Check with your marinas of choice and find out what their restrictions on watercraft are. Some marinas may not have the equipment or services offered to maintain all forms of watercraft and larger vessels such as yachts will need special care and handling that only select marinas may offer.

The structure of the marina itself is also very important.  Many watercrafts need specific methods of docking. Also many owners have a preference between indoor and outdoor storage for their vessel.  This is extremely important to consider when you are talking about the security and care of your boat.

While it may not seem important now, it’s a nice convenience to find out if your marina can offer repair and maintenance services should they be needed. Many marina clubs and memberships will come with some form of a maintenance option or plan. It may be well worth your while to invest now in your watercraft’s future.

You always want to be sure to keep in mind the attitude you want your marina to convey.  Marinas range from the very up-tight and high-class, to the laid back and relaxed fisherman’s marina.  Some boaters enjoy the feature that many marinas offer, the club house. If this is something you would be interested in it is in your best interest to inquire if the marinas you are looking at have a club house.

You will notice very quickly that the choices involved with picking your Marina Docks are endless.

Aquarium Fish Health Reviews & Guide

Saturday 26 September 2009 @ 11:33 pm

One of the main problems that novice aquarist and even some expert aquarist face is fish death. To extent that the most quit keeping aquarium fish is frustrating. But fish death can be avoided. Most fish deaths are caused as a result of both an internal and external types parasites that compete with the fish in tank.

You should be able to discover when they have been infected by this parasite and be able to treat them, when you watch your aquarium fish to avoid fish death.

Watch out for the following White Spot disease behavioral symptoms in your fish.

- Constant lying on the bottom or hanging at the surface.

- Rubbing of the body against rocks

- Gasping at the water surface

- No response to feeding

- General dullness and lethargy

- Hovering in a corner

- Fish swimming with clamps up

This ailment is referred to as White Spot disease and is caused by the parasite called Ichthyophthirius Multifillis.

Attaches itself to the fish, this parasite has a free-swimming stage. The most common chemical used in treating infected fishes is Methylene Blue. You could buy a one per cent stock solution from a reputable chemist or aquarium shop and apply at 0.8 to 1.0 ml per gallon of water. The fishes must remain in this bath until every while spot has disappeared. A water change after treatment is prolonged contact or else necessary with the chemical may affect the fertility of the fish.

Another tip is you should remove it to prevent the coal from absorbing the Methylene Blue, if you are using a side filter with activated charcoal. Another tip is during treatment you should use artificial aeration with coarse bubbles near the surface, since a dirty bottom would inactivate the medicament by absorption. A better measure is to remove all dirt from the bottom before treatment.

Methylene Blue does not affect plants if used in weaker concentration, it’s harmless to young fish and unlike the general belief.

5 Reasons to Purchase Marineland Eclipse 5 as Your Starter Aquarium

Friday 25 September 2009 @ 9:02 pm

When you decide to buy your first aquarium, you will probably come across Marineland Eclipse 5 in your search. This style is very popular. But the choices of brands and designs are so plentiful, that it may feel overwhelming to have so many decisions to make about an area that is still rather new to you. So let us go through a typical decision-making process in purchasing an aquarium and use Marineland Eclipse 5 as an example. You can apply similar steps to your buying process involving any other brand of aquarium.

1. Aquarium Size

This is typically the first choice to make when buying a new aquarium. The size of the tank you buy will depend largely on how much space you have and what your fish will need. Is this aquarium going to be placed in your child’s room, or in your office? Marineland Eclipse has tanks that are 1, 2 and 3 gallons. Even though the absolute minimum of space for a single Betta fish is 2-3 gallons, I would not recommend a tank smaller than 5 gallons.

So, I think an aquarium like the Marineland Eclipse 5 is a good starter home for one Betta fish. They have several products in their 5 gallon line-up: Marineland Eclipse Hex 5 Fully Integrated Aquarium Kit, Marineland Eclipse Hex 5 Aquarium Kit and the Eclipse System 5 Corner Combo.

2. Material

The next decision is often whether to choose a glass or an acrylic tank. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but with an aquarium this size, I assume that ease of maintenance and weight will be important, especially if you are purchasing this tank for a child. Acrylic is lighter than glass and it doesn’t break. That would make it a safer choice for those with children.

Acrylic is more expensive than glass, but at this price level, it won't make a huge difference.

Some people like glass more, because it doesn’t scratch easily. With cheap acrylic that used to be a concern, but Marineland Eclipse is made with a higher quality acrylic which doesn’t scratch that easily. And if you do get scratches on it, there are plenty of products available to get them out.

3. Ease of Aquarium Set up

The Eclipse 5 is easy to set up. Simplicity was one of the features they were striving for with Eclipse 5. Lighting and filtration are included which saves you a few extra steps and several additional purchases. Many people who have bought the Eclipse talk about how simple it is to set up and operate.

4. Aquarium Style

There are many different styles of aquariums these days. There is something for anyone’s taste. All this variety is available even with the small sizes. After all, an aquarium can be much more than just a place to put your fish in. It is an addition to your living area which can have a big impact on its attractiveness. Aquariums are wonderful to watch, even if their design is not spectacular. It is what’s inside the tank that is the source of so much pleasure to tank owners.

And yet a poor design can be a real liability. It can diminish the joy of having an aquarium. With Marineland Eclipse you won’t have that problem. It is simple, yet attractive and the hexagonal shape offers a great panoramic viewing area.

5. Aquarium Price

And finally there comes the question of price. Marineland Eclipse is priced very competitively. You are looking to spend between $40 and $60 for a 5 gallon tank. It is a good price which doesn’t present a barrier to starting this hobby. Again, as I pointed out above, the fact that a bio-wheel filter and mini-compact fluorescent lighting system are included, means that you won't have to spend money on buying those components separately.

Beginner’s Guide To Aquarium Maintenance

Thursday 24 September 2009 @ 3:02 pm

A healthy life for your acquarium fish can usually be obtained by you keeping your freshwater acquarium clean. You have fish and plants that live long and healthy lives in a clean acquarium. Acquiring a regular maintenance cycle will reward you having with healthy fish. You will surely want a safe habitat for your fish, so maintain it like your car by keeping a regular schedule of events. It is certainly worth your time to investigate canister fish filters and select the best model for your size tank.

I can not stress enough how important it is to have the best equipment available to keep your aquarium clean. Your fish and aquarium plants are very sensitive to any changes in their environment. There are good steps you may follow to guarantee safety.

Be sure you never use a general type of household cleaner on their tank. There are chemical traces that can be toxic and you want to be sure they are not left behind, so thoroughly rinse it. All of your fish can die overnight by this cause. You didn’t want this ending.

A clean water supply must always be maintained. You can achieve this by purchasing and maintaining an appropriate filter and media. The filter media will have good bacteria which work to eliminate toxins in the water. You need to take care when rinsing the filter media. Even if you should remove the good bacteria from your tank, toxins like ammonia may contaminate it. Cleaning instructions should be supplied by your filter manufacturer. A maintenance schedule and instructions that they provide should always be followed. Remember, too much cleaning can lead to removal of good bacteria. You must keep a clean tank to avoid a build up of waste and toxins in the water.

If you need help selecting a filter, I highly recommend the Penn Plax Cascade canister filter line of filters.

The experts advise that all of your tank and its decorations should be cleaned every two weeks. This would be for glass tanks. Plan to clean your tank once a week if it made from acrylic. Make sure that you take steps to stop a buildup of algae.

It is a good idea to check all of your mechanical equipment when you are performing your aquarium cleaning. Make sure that all items are functioning properly. A malfunction of your pump or a filter not circulating water is definitely unwanted. to maintain your tank and any problem that could get out of hand by inspecting these items every two weeks. If your old filter appears to be out of date, perhaps you should look at a solution such as the fluval 305 canister filter.

Partial acquarium water also needs to be changed by you in addition to regular cleaning and inspecting the equipment in your tank. You are the only influence on your fish tank which is an ecosystem. But because of this action, there is no way for waste buildup to remove itself. You should remember to change partial water and gravel sand or gravel periodically.

Remember to add water conditioner when you add or replace water in your acquarium. To remove toxins from tap water, use these. Tap water usually does include some clorine and amonia, which can surely hurt your fish and plants.

You should create a schedule and be sure to stick it. If you are unable to perform the activities, then make sure to find a dependable person who is able to do so in your absence. It is understood that years of enjoyment can be provided with fish who are provided a clean habitat.

Buying Your First Fish Tank

Wednesday 23 September 2009 @ 12:02 pm

Some people when they purchase an fish tank, look upon it only as a decoration, a piece of living art, or furniture. But if you plan on having fish live in the aquarium, and if you love animals, you should want them to have the best environment possible. This means trying to create an ecosystem as close to their natural environment as you can. After all, fishes do have personalities as you’ll discover once they have had a chance to acclimatize to their new aquarium surroundings.

If this is your first time buying a fish tank, there are a few guidelines that you should follow to give your fish the best chance at both survival and of having a happy life.

Number one, where will your new fish tank live? Wherever you place it, it shouldn’t be a place that has lots of extreme temperature changes. Even though aquarium heaters can, to a degree, help to control the water temperature, they are not built to regulate between extreme temperature ranges. The place should also have strong enough flooring to easily withstand the weight of the aquarium.

For instance, when filled up with water a ten gallon tank is generally not a problem. It’ll probably weight somewhere between 85 and 95 pounds depending on the weight of the tank. On the other hand, a huge fish tank could very well weigh over a thousand pounds and, as a result, not  be safe for your current flooring. Be careful also of positioning the tank in the path of direct sunlight which can possibly cause the water to overheat. Finally, your tank should be placed in an area where it will be easy to maintain. If not, it’s very likely that the difficulty of maintaining it will, unfortunately, cause it to be maintained very little or not at all.

The second most significant matter to think about when purchasing an aquarium is its size. If the aquarium is too small it will cramp the living area of your fish making them miserable. But it’ll also require you to clean it more often. You shouldn’t even think of buying a tank smaller than a ten gallon tank. And if you plan on having your fish breed, probably a twenty gallon or greater tank would be best. Probably the best rule of thumb is to buy the largest sized tank that you can sensibly afford and that will fit into the room where you will keep the tank.

Thirdly, when you buy a fish tank, buy one with standardized dimensions. You’ll find it much easier to find accessories for. For instance, aquarium filters come in a variety of standard sizes. However, if you have an odd sized or custom tank, it may be very difficult to find the right filter for it, because your local pet store will most likely carry standard sizes only. Additionally, if the tank manufacturer has gone out of business, it may well be impossible. But, even if you do find the filter, odds are that you’ll pay more for it than you would a standard filter. You’ll have similar problems when trying to fit your aquariums with things  such as aquarium pumps, plants, backgrounds, and so on.

The software generates a Fixed Page Layout. All objects have a fixed position which is not affected by other objects. This also allows you to overlap objects and give you much more control over the layout of the page.
